Jack and the Giant XD
Write one paragraph each for why Jack and the Giant both deserve our sympathy.
Jack deserves my sympathy as he had always been a helpful and a kind-hearted boy, even though he led a poor life with his mother. To earn money, both of them had to live on a cow that produced milk. However, when that cow could not produce any milk anymore, they were at a lost and the situation was desperate as they had no means to earn income. Jack was not discouraged. “Cheer up, mother, I’ll go and get work somewhere.” Base on this sentence said by Jack, we could see that Jack was responsible and determined; even though he was only a boy and he knew that it would be tough as nobody would hire him. Jack then traded his cow for ‘magical’ beans. Due to his poor situation, he resorted to being greedy by climbing up to the top of the beanstalk to steal valuable items that were later sold for money. He did not just steal once, but thrice. From this aspect, I do not think Jack was not entirely in the wrong as he was desperate. Everyone has a reason for his actions. Due to their abject poverty, it was understandable that Jack had to steal some valuable items to earn money. Hence, I truly sympathise with Jack though I do not approve of his indiscipline for stealing. The giant deserves my sympathy. He may be evil to the little boys by eating them but he was robbed by a greedy Jack that stole his valuable items due to his poor situation. Due to his evil habit of having boys for breakfast, his wife sometime had to lie to him that there was no boy in the house as evidence in this statement when the wife said, “Nonsense, dear”…”You’re dreaming” when he insisted that he smelled the blood of an English man and whether dead or alive, he would have his bones to grind his bread. When Jack took off after stealing the harp from the giant, he was pursued hotly by the ungainly giant and when Jack reached the bottom of the beanstalk, he axed the stalk and the giant fell and injured himself. From the above two events, I sympathise with the giant as (1) his wife did not trust him which is abnormal as living couples should trust each other but due to his evil habit of eating boys for breakfast, the wife sometimes had to lie to him so that he would not continue his evil way. Therefore, there was distrust and lack of love between the giant and his wife and the former led a monotonous and meaningless life and (2) the Giant was robbed by an ingratitude Jack a couple of times and finally injured himself while pursuing Jack, hoping to recover the loot from Jack.
